The Call to Serve
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms… If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:10-11b
Why do I serve God?
These verses from Peter tell us that there are three reasons we serve God:
1. In order to serve others.
When we serve others we are obeying the commands of scripture and making a difference in the lives of those in our church and comunity. Additionally, through service to others we strengthen our church family, we express our love and thanks for all the things God has done for us, and most importantly, we draw closer to Christ and develop more Christ-like character.
2. Learning to rely on God.
Peter says believers should recognize that they are serving on behalf of God to others, while He gives the ability and strength for us to do so. This gives us an opportunity to learn to depend on God and to trust in Him in a deeper way. We see God working through us and we realize that we can accomplish so much more with God than we ever could in our own strength.
3. To glorify God.
The transforming power of Jesus Christ is displayed in the lives of those who serve selflessly. The kind of service that directs glory to God is an example of the life-changing nature of a relationship with Jesus Christ and is one way we can share the gospel in our community.
FBC needs YOUR help, time and gifts to minister within our church and to effectively reach our community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Am I equipped to serve God?
“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different
gifts, according to the grace given us.” Romans 12:4-6a
Each of us has been given spiritual gifts to be utilized alongside members of the church body for the benefit of others. In order to use these gifts you only need a heart for God and a willingness to serve.
